A charity home built for a Christchurch man with a brain tumour is finally for sale.
It has been more than a year since construction began at the Hillmorton site, but organisers Build For a Life charitable trust hope to tie up a sale soon with the money going to Darren Anderson, who needs expensive treatment to battle a brain tumour.
Trustee and Antigua St Placemakers operations manager Brent Stanley-Joblin said the house, built entirely by volunteers, had the final touches put on it over the weekend.
"We had some people cleaning up. We did the landscaping, and laid the lawn and rolled it," Stanley-Joblin said.
Last December vandals ransacked the site, causing serious delays.
Anderson, 35, will become the first beneficiary of the trust.
"It's taken a long time. You can't make demands of people who are volunteering their time."
Anderson is now back working fulltime with Antigua St Placemakers.
He underwent a year of chemotherapy following consultation with American cancer specialists last year.
"I'm feeling pretty good. If anything, I'm just lacking a bit of strength and stamina. It doesn't mean I'm cured or anything, just, hopefully, we've got everything under control."
Stanley-Joblin said the trust was hoping to make between $100,000 and $150,000 from the sale, with the money going towards Anderson's medical fees and expenses from his trips to the United States.
"The trust is ongoing ... We'll continue fundraising," he said.
The house is being sold through Remax.
