Giant sunflowers bouncing around on pogo stilts were busy bringing spring to inner-city Christchurch yesterday.

Street performers Chris Devious and Pascal Ackerman donned sunflower attire and bounced their way through the central business district, handing out over 1000 tulips to pedestrians.

The event was organised by the Christchurch City Council to raise people's spirits after winter and celebrate the first day of spring.

Sheena Baines, of the Christchurch City Council events team, said it was nice to bring a smile to people's faces.

"People were generally quite touched by what we were doing and we had a great time doing it," she said.

Baines said the "sunflowers" bounced around on spring-loaded stilts.
