Anyone planning a quiet picnic at the Groynes in Belfast on Sunday should think again.

The annual Take a Kid Fishing event is expected to lure thousands of Canterbury children to the four Groynes lakes.

Spokesman Dave Denton said the event aimed to help families enjoy the outdoors, and to give children an opportunity to try their hand at fishing.

"Fishing is a great leveller, and we see it as a great way to get families involved in outdoor recreation," Denton said.

Isaac Salmon Ltd has donated hundreds of salmon for the event, with the tasty attraction of being able to keep the catch.

To keep on the right side of the law, a free fishing licence is issued by Fish and Game and covers junior anglers for the day. Fishing rods and bait are also available.

The gates open at 9am for anglers under 12, with those under 17 starting at 1pm.
