Cantabrians will be able to gather and pay tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela this Thursday.

A public memorial service will be held at 5.30pm at the Christchurch Transitional Cathedral.

People can sign a condolence book in the foyer of the CCC civic offices from lunchtime today.

The book will be presented to the South African high commissioner to New Zealand, Zodwa Lallie.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel will join Lallie and members of the local South African community to commemorate Mandela.

"I know the people of Christchurch join me in regarding Nelson Mandela as one of the truly inspirational world leaders - not just of our time, but of all time," Dalziel said.

"In the spirit of his life's work, we're inviting people from all walks of life to share in this moment with us," Dalziel said.
