Police are looking for a man who threatened to kill a stranger in central Christchurch this afternoon.

The incident happened near the intersection of Moorhouse Ave and Madras St just before 3pm today.

A police spokesman had little information. "Some chap said he was going to kill some lady. He said he had a gun in his backpack."

The man and woman were not believed to be known to each other.

The man had since left the area and two police units had been dispatched to "see if they can pick him up", the spokesman said.

No further details were available.
