Police have released security camera images of a man being sought in relation to two assaults on sex workers early on Friday.
The man is shown walking on Manchester St near the Bealey Ave intersection about 3am on Friday, shortly before the first attack. The second attack occurred about two hours later.
Detective Sergeant Richard Quested said police want to speak to the man in relation to at least one of the attacks.
"We can't say for sure that the two incidents are linked, but there are similarities about the descriptions, timing and locations so we are keeping an open mind on the possibiilty that the same offender was involved."
The man was described as Maori or Polynesian, with long straggly hair possibly tied in a ponytail. He was solidly built and was pictured wearing a light-coloured jacket.
One sex worker was sexually assaulted on an empty section in Bealey Ave, between Manchester and Madras streets, about 3am. About 5am, another sex worker was punched in the grounds of the St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, next to St Mary's School.
Police are appealing for information from anyone who might have witnessed the incidents, or seen anything unusual in the area around Manchester St and Bealey Ave about 3am and 5am on Friday.
Anyone with information could contact police on (03) 363 7400 or anonymously via 0800 555 111.
