Concern over the state of the Heathcote River has led to the postponement of an annual race.

"We've decided to hold off for a bit this year, while we look more carefully at environmental conditions in and around the river," Christchurch City Council recreation and sports manager John Filsell said.

The event, run in partnership with community organisations and featuring homemade rafts, craft and canoes, was scheduled for December 6 but would now probably be held in February.

Participants are always warned not to swallow river water, to rinse off after they get out and ensure they wash their hands before eating.

Filsell said they would check the river over the coming months. He was confident the event would run in February.

The postponement, announced on Friday, came nine days after the council confirmed to The Press the event would be held in December.

Council City Water and Waste operations and maintenance manager Mike Bourke said at the time if there was heavy rain and a sewage overflow in the days leading up to the race the event might not go ahead.

I am a primary school teacher and at university I did a project on this. I found most of that rubbish was not able to be dumped for free, maybe that is why it ended up in the river? See my blog and let me know what you think? http://shaunwoodictblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/using-google-docs-to-present-online.html

I am sad becuase I did the race last year and came 3rd I forgot what we won, and I want to do the race again and soon because I like winning, so I'm going this year to help clean up all the trash and try to stop people putting trash in the river. Rivers are to be left alone because they look beautiful flowing through our city and people like fishing in them.

The council should take a stand against all this pollution in our rivers. I have a friend who has a raft at home and regulary takes part in the Heathcote River race. If we are to continue the event with the rivers in the state they are in, then we are going to have to move to the high alpine streams that are freezing cold and no one would participate in the event. Finally the rivers are a great asset to our city, not only in an eventing point of view, but alone in just feeding the many ducks that inhabit the rivers. They are already a very important asset.

We are 2 girls in a year 5/6 primary class and this is what we think ... We (Sylvia and Georgia) think that it is a good article to encourage people to throw rubbish IN the bin, or reuse it. It also shows that is what the whole world may look like in a few years time, if we keep littering and not recyling all we can. We are from Ilam Primary School, and there we are taght ab out sustainabilaty, so we saw your article and wanted to comment to encourage you to write more articles like this, so people will start realising what it is doing to mother nature ie. earth and how it will impact us children in the future. we hope to let everybody know if WE don't be sustainible the children in the future will get the impact, and we hope that you guys can show it in the news paper!

We are 2 boys in a year 5/6 primary class and this is what we think ... Hi, We've read your article "River choking on rubbish", we think that it's digusting that you actully found all that junk in 3 days! Our opinion is and we're sure others agree is that the council needs to act fast or The Garden City will no longer be a garden but will become a dumping ground. Thanks.

We are 2 girls in a year 5/6 primary class and this is what we think ... A disgracse because New Zealand's known for being clean and green. You should not even think about throwing rubbish in the river. Who would?? It's sad all the factories are planted around that river, and so they dump their rubbish there. There are rubbish dumps and there is also recycling so why not use them?!?! Rivers are for fishing and swimming NOT at any stage for a dump. Think about the things being put at risk. Rivers are meant to be clean not pulluted. Think about the environment and think what you are doing to nature.

When I first arrived in Christchurch fifteen years ago, it lived up to being called the "Garden City". Today, the name should be called "The Rubbish City", as it is full of graffiti and rubbish strewn about the place.
