Police are investigating the suspected arson of a portable builder's shed and road cones in the red zone this morning.

Firefighters were called to reports of smoke in an area near Murphy Park, Kaiapoi, about 5.30am.

When they arrived they found a shed and road cones alight on Rich St, a Fire Service spokesman said.

The fires were suspicious and police would investigate, he said.
