A woman has been flown to hospital after her car hit ice and rolled in North Canterbury this morning.

The crash happened on State Highway 1, just north of Greta Valley, about 7.50am.

The woman's vehicle rolled across the road after hitting ice and crashed through a fence.

The car landed upside down in a paddock, but the woman was able to free herself from the wreckage.

A Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesperson said the woman, who was aged in her 40s, was treated by St John paramedics before being flown to Christchurch Hospital in a comfortable condition.

State Highway 1 was closed while the rescue helicopter was at the crash scene, but had since reopened.
