A man is in hospital with serious injures after a motorcycle crash on the Waimakariri River bed in North Canterbury.

A man has been seriously injured in a motorbike crash at Canterbury's Waimakariri River.

St John spokesman Ian Henderson said emergency services were alerted to the incident just north of Christchurch at 8.07pm on Thursday.

A man, aged in his 30s, was flown to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries, including a cut to his neck. 

Senior Sergeant Chris Scott said the injured man and a friend were travelling along the river bed on separate motorbikes when the incident happened.

His friend raised the alarm.

Fire Service southern communications shift manager Tim Reynolds said a fire crew had helped move the man to the rescue helicopter waiting nearby at 8.15pm.
