Rolled milk tanker closes highway
A milk tanker has overturned on State Highway 7 near Waikari, spilling its cargo and blocking the road.
Emergency services are on their way to the scene in the Weka Pass, between Waipara and Waikari, after the tanker rolled about 3.45pm today.
A Fire Service spokesman said the tanker had rolled near Frog Rock and was blocking the road.
The driver of the truck had possible leg injuries and was being attended to by St John, he said.
A police spokesman said initial reports indicated milk was leaking from the tanker after the crash.
Diversions were in place around the scene.
An update on the Hurunui District Council's Facebook page said the road had been closed.
"Detours are via Ram Paddock Rd or Greta Valley and Scargill,'' it said.
The road is likely to be closed for a couple of hours but we'll update as soon as we hear anything."
It is not expected the road will open before 10pm.
A local resident, who did not want to be named, was one of the first on the scene with his wife, a First Response paramedic.
He said the truck and trailer unit were still intact but lying across the road ,and milk was spilling "everywhere from it", including into a nearby creek.
"There's concentrated milk flowing out of the two tanks which has ended up in the Weka Creek," he said.
"The tank at the back was crushed," he said.
The driver of the truck "didn't seem that bad", he said, but had possible head injuries.
A St John spokeswoman said the man was transported to Christchurch Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
Traffic was being diverted, the resident said, but some trucks close to the scene of the crash would likely be there for some time.
"There's a couple of trucks on one side that will be stuck for a while because they can't turn around [in the pass]."
