Driver killed after hitting bridge
A motorcyclist has died after crashing his bike into a bridge while overtaking a vehicle in North Canterbury.
Emergency services were called to the serious crash on State Highway 1 on the north side of the Ashley River bridge, near Waikuku, at 3.20pm.
A male in his mid-20s had been travelling north on the highway when he clipped a car and smashed into the side of the bridge, Sergeant Colin Stewart said. He died at the scene.
"He appears to have hit a motor vehicle while passing and has hit the bridge, and has died as a result of the crash," Stewart said.
The male had hit two cars before he crashed, with both sustaining minor damage. No other people were injured in the accident.
The motorcycle was extensively damaged.
Speed was believed to have been a factor in the crash, Stewart said.
The highway was closed after the crash, but it has now reopened.
There are diversions in place for light vehicles only, due to a weight limit on a bridge on an alternative route.
The serious crash unit were still at the scene investigating the crash.
