An alleged recidivist drink driver "could have killed someone" when he crashed his vehicle in North Canterbury this morning.
Sergeant Mike Brooklands, of Rangiora, said the young male was already facing three drink driving charges before the crash on Ohoka Rd about 4am today.
The "absolutely trollied" driver hit a roadside barrier, shunting his vehicle about 100 metres along the road and "smashing the car to smithereens".
A passenger was trapped in the vehicle for about an hour before he was rescued by firefighters.
Both males were taken to Christchurch Hospital.
Brooklands said police were awaiting the results of a blood alcohol test, but it was likely the driver would be facing various charges.
"He's an absolute menace. He could have killed someone."
