A rescue effort is underway near Hanmer Springs after a woman fell in a river while fishing.

Emergency services were called to the incident on Hanmer Springs Rd, north of the bridge over the Waiau River, about 11.45am.

A police communications spokeswoman said a woman fell in the river while fishing but managed to scramble onto rocks.

Her companion phoned for help, the spokeswoman said.

Emergency services were trying to work out how to get to the woman.

A helicopter could not be used because of power lines in the area, the spokeswoman said.
