The Waimakariri Bridge has been cleared after a crash during rush hour this morning.

Southbound traffic was blocked after a trailer jack-knifed and came off a truck on the State Highway 1 bridge.

Senior Constable Mike Farrall said the truck was headed south over the bridge when traffic stopped suddenly in front about 8.30am.

The driver was unable to stop on time. The coupling on the trailer, which had a small digger on it, broke when it jack-knifed.

Farrall said the truck crashed into the bridge and the trailer came to a stop against the bridge railing.

Southbound traffic was blocked for about 15 minutes and delays for motorists ensued.
