One person has been taken to hospital after the trailer they were towing rolled on Christchurch's northern motorway.

The incident happened near the Waimakariri River Bridge on State Highway 1 about 4.30pm.

A police spokesman said a trailer being towed by a four-wheel-drive rolled on the motorway. The cause of the crash was not yet known.

A St John spokeswoman said one person was taken to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries.

The road was expected to be cleared shortly, but motorists were advised there could be some delays.
