Police investigating a fatal motorcycle crash in North Canterbury say the cause is still a mystery.

A passerby alerted emergency services after coming across the crash on Ashley Gorge Rd, near Glentui, about 9.15pm yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Malcolm Johnston said it appeared a 53-year-old Rangiora man riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle had hit the side of a bridge.

He died at the scene.

No other vehicles were believed to be involved, but other contributing factors in the crash were still unknown.

''It's a bit of a mystery as to someone would crash at this point,'' Johnston said.

An autopsy is yet to be carried out.
