A motorcyclist killed after hitting a bridge near Oxford has been identified as a convicted rapist.

Donald Clifford McMillan, 53, of Rangiora died after hitting the side of the Glentui Bridge near Oxford.

A passerby called emergency services after coming across the crash on Ashley Gorge Rd about 9.15pm on March 6.

It appeared McMillan failed to negotiate a bend and struck the side of the bridge while riding his Harley Davidson. He died at the scene.

There is a police investigation into the circumstances of the crash. There were no other vehicles involved.

McMillan was jailed in 1998 for raping at knifepoint a Manchester St prostitute who was nearly six months pregnant.

Then aged 38, McMillan was told he was at risk of preventive detention if he offended again.

McMillan had previously been deported from Australia because of his criminal convictions, included indecent assault.
