A Christchurch woman charged with stabbing her partner in the back with a hunting knife as he held their son has appeared in court.

Leah Stacey Chandler, 23, and her 30-year-old partner were having a domestic-related argument at a Barbadoes St property when Chandler stabbed him, police say.

The man was holding the couple's 14-month-old son, who suffered minor cuts in the incident, which happened about 7pm.

Chandler was granted bail but refused name suppression.

Police prosecutor Sergeant John Harris said Chandler was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

The man and child were treated at Christchurch Hospital and discharged overnight.

Chandler has entered no plea to two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Duty lawyer Mark Callaghan asked for interim name suppression for Chandler until she had counsel assigned to her, but it was refused by Judge Richard Watson.

Chandler was remanded on bail to a post-committal conference on August 23, with conditions that she not possess or consume alcohol and abide by a curfew from 6pm to 9am.

Chandler was back in court before Judge Watson later in the day.

Callaghan explained that her mother had arrived in Christchurch to take her back to Nelson to stay with her there while on bail.

Judge Watson and the police agreed to the change of bail address to Stoke, Nelson, from tomorrow.
