SPLASHING OUT: Five-year-old Emily Henderson enjoys the opening day at Rolleston's new Selwyn Aquatic Centre.

A $15 million aquatic centre has opened in Rolleston with more than 1400 pre-enrolments for its swim school.

The water complex opened yesterday, giving swimmers their first taste of its eight-lane 25-metre main pool, hydrotherapy pool, leisure pool with a lazy river and learn-to-swim pool.

Mum Sarah Henderson said daughter Emily and her three- year-old brother Jack had loved their time at the new pool yesterday, particularly the lazy river.

"They were so excited; they were looking forward to it for about two weeks. It was just amazing, there was so much going on and it was so nice and clean."

She hoped to enrol her children at the pool's new swim school if there was still space.

"It would be so much easier doing lessons here rather than having to drive to Christchurch every weekend."

Mayor Kelvin Coe said Selwyn residents, who raised about $1.4m for the project, should be very proud of their new 2800sqm complex, which has been decorated with more than 200 tiles painted by the community.

The centre created about 50 full and part-time jobs.
