Stock killed after truck flips
A driver has escaped uninjured after his stock truck overturned in Harewood this afternoon, but some of his shipment were not so lucky.
Emergency services were called after the truck and trailer unit overturned on McLeans Island Rd about 4pm.
A police spokesman said the truck was travelling west towards Pound Rd when the rear trailer unit veered across the other side of the road.
The truck remained upright but the crate on the rear trailer, which was carrying sheep, came off the trailer and slid off onto the side of the road.
No other vehicles were believed to have been involved in the accident.
St John were in attendance, but the truck driver was uninjured.
At least 25 sheep were killed in total.
Police officers and SPCA staff put down about 12 of the 25 dead animals, due to their injuries.
Members of the public and motorists helped to herd the surviving stock into a nearby paddock.
One lane of McLeans Island Rd was partially blocked as police wait for machinery to move the crate from the road, but the road remains open.
The police crash unit and the commercial vehicle investigation unit remain at the scene.
