A suspicious house fire has occurred overnight in Christchurch.

The fire service received a call at 1.15am to the Patten Street address in Avonside, southern fire communications shift manager Karl Patterson said.

The house was well ablaze when two engines from Christchurch arrived, and took about 45 minutes to get under control.

The house on the corner of Patten St and Retreat Rd was empty, and is just outside the residential red zone.

The single story house was extensively damaged.

Although the cause was yet to be determined, it was "looking suspicious at this stage", Patterson said.

Police have a scene guard at the property now, and fire safety would be returning this morning.
