Cyclists made the most of the warm weekend to hit the reopened McLeans Island trails.

Jamie Gray, 4, and dad, Craig, were out yesterday testing out the trails that reopened on Saturday. The popular mountain bike tracks have been closed since September 10, when a windstorm caused extensive damage to the forest.

Environment Canterbury staff have spent the past two months clearing fallen and dangerous trees and ensuring the tracks are safe for cyclists and walkers.

Some tracks remain closed while work continues, and the main forest beyond the stopbank is closed for forest harvesting.

The picnic area, oval and shop are all open and available for use, as is a new track that heads east from the car park.

Since mid-October, reduced track access has been available from a temporary entrance, but the normal entrance is once again open to the public.
