The north-bound lanes of Christchurch's northern motorway have reopened after a trailer-load of bricks were cleared from the road.

The bricks fell off a trailer near the Christchurch end of the northern motorway about 4.15pm, a police spokesman said.

The two lanes north were temporarily closed, but had reopened by 6pm.

Delays were still possible though as backed-up traffic cleared.

The south-bound lanes were not affected by the incident.
