An arsonist lit a series of fires through a Christchurch house this morning, putting residents in a neighbouring property at risk.

Firefighters from Harewood and Sockburn stations fought the blaze on Dickson Cres, Hornby, for about an hour, saving residents in an adjoining flat from losing their home.

Sockburn senior station officer Peter Dellaca said the fire was totally involved when firefighters arrived just after 4am.

A firewall between the two units ensured the residents in neighbouring flat were left unharmed, he said.

Fire risk management officer Kelvin Hampton said the fire was being treated as suspicious as it appeared to have been lit in multiple locations through the house.

The last people to live in the house were believed to have moved out about two weeks ago, leaving the flat unoccupied at the time of this morning's blaze.

Police are investigating the fire.
