Thirty involved in street brawl

A man was taken to hospital with a stab wound after a thirty person brawl erupted in a suburban Christchurch street.

Police were initially called to reports of an out of control party in Evatt St, Bryndwr, about 1.45am Sunday.

However, it quickly turned to alcohol-fueled chaos with residents hearing bottles breaking, women screaming and up to thirty people fighting outside a home.

Those involved had fled by the time police arrived.

A man later contacted them to say he had been admitted to Christchurch Hospital with a stab wound to his lower back.

Detective Sergeant Al Lester this afternoon appealed for anyone involved in the stabbing to come forward.

Residents told police members of the Mongrel Mob were involved, he said

"I would say the majority of those persons [involved in the brawl] were severely intoxicated. Obtaining full details of what occurred has proved difficult.

"If the offender would like to come forward we'd be more than happy to charge him."

Anyone with information should contact Christchurch police on 03 363 7400
