Phone and internet services have been restored to about 900 residents around Riccarton following a fault.

A Chorus spokeswoman said there had been a damaged fibre in the Riccarton exchange.

Although the fault was found last night, fixing required "quite a bit of excavation" so it was left until this morning.

Work started at 7am and service was restored this afternoon, the spokeswoman said.

She was only aware of one business affected, the other customers appeared to be residential.
