A six-month-old baby is lucky to be alive after a car apparently pulled out into the Northern motorway near Christchurch this afternoon.

A witness to the crash Daniel Wilson said he was first on the scene and helped pull the baby from the car.

"They [were] very lucky they didnt lose their baby," he said.

He said it seemed a car pulled out without looking properly.

The two cars, which collided shortly after 3pm, were removed by tow truck and the occupants of the cars treated for minor injuries by ambulance officers.
