A large fire has broken out just west of Christchurch.

There were nine fire trucks fighting the 1200 square-metre blaze that started in a paddock and shelter belt just before 4pm, a Southern fire communications spokesman said.

Firefighters were still working to contain the fire on Old West Coast Rd.
