Bag snatcher knocks over elderly woman
A bag-snatcher knocked an elderly woman to the ground and ran off with her purse in what police are calling a "despicable" act.
The 76-year-old Christchurch woman was walking in London St, Richmond, towards Stanmore Rd, when the man approached her and asked for money.
As she reached for her purse, the man grabbed it.
A brief tussle ensued, in which the offender pushed the woman to the ground. She hit her head as she fell, but was not injured.
The man ran off towards Stanmore Rd with the purse, which contained a small amount of cash.
Police spoke to the woman this morning. She was shaken but unhurt.
"It's despicable that anyone would take advantage of an elderly person in this way," Detective Sergeant Al Lester said.
"We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident, or a person fitting this description in the Richmond area yesterday afternoon."
The offender was described as a Maori in his early 20s, of medium build with black hair and a slight moustache. He wore jeans and a black t-shirt with white or gold writing on the front.
