Police are seeking witnesses after a man suffered serious injuries when he was attacked with a shovel. 

Emergency services were called to a house in Matipo St, in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton, about 9.45pm yesterday.

A 34-year-old man was taken to Christchurch Hospital.Detective Sergeant Valyn Barrett said he did not know if alcohol was involved in the incident, but confirmed the victim had been assaulted with a shovel.

A scene guard was at the property overnight until a forensic examination was completed this morning.

Barrett said the victim's condition had "improved markedly" this morning and he did not require surgery.

"We don't have any fears for his safety."

Police were still investigating the assault at a residential property and were seeking a number of witnesses.

No arrested had been made yet.

Those involved in the assault were believed to be known to each other, but Barrett was unable to say what their connection was.
