Phillipstown School has been told it will close, but the community is vowing to fight on.
Principal Tony Simpson said it was a "sad day".
"We have a long, long journey in front of us.
"The minister has decided the merger will be going ahead, from January 2014."
The school will merge with Woolston School.
Address: 39 Nursery Rd, Phillipstown, Christchurch

Building damage: One building has earthquake damage.
Cost to fix school and strengthen it over 10 years: $3.5 million
