Research project to help schools embrace new tech
New Zealand schools need to transform the way they teach children to fully embrace new technology, a University of Canterbury education specialist says.
Teachers need to move away from being the "sage on the stage" to being "the guide on the side", Professor Niki Davis said.
Some schools had made that shift, but others did not know where to start, she said.
A research project, led by Davis and fellow education specialist Dr Julie Mackey, will help school leaders improve pupil success.
The pair have been granted $130,000 from the government-funded Teaching and Learning Research Initiative for the project and will work with five schools, including Christchurch's Belfast School.
Davis said if teachers did not change the way they taught pupils, by allowing the pupils to take the lead, the country would not be fully embracing 21st-century learning.
