A young man had to be cut out of a vehicle after colliding with another car near Christchurch this afternoon.

The crash happened at the intersection of Ellesmere Junction and Leeston roads in Springston, south of Christchurch, about 12.40pm today.

A St John spokesman said a man aged in his mid-20s was "encased" in his vehicle following the crash and had to be freed by firefighters.

The man suffered moderate head, rib and leg injuries and was taken to Christchurch Hospital.

His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

No one else was injured in the crash and the road had since been cleared.
