A man has suffered serious injuries after a car smashed into a power pole near Christchurch this evening.

State Highway 1 has been closed in both directions following the crash just south of Marshs Rd, Templeton, about 5pm.

Firefighters were working to free a man with serious injuries who was trapped in the vehicle. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

Another person suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Police southern communications shift manager Hemi Waretini said there had been a number of other nose-to-tail crashes in the area as "rubber neckers" tried to see what had happened.

Rain had made the road in the area slippery, he said.

"If people drive to the conditions I'm sure they'll be fine."

Police hoped to have the road open again in the next hour. Detours would be put in place in the interim.
