A report of a bomb shell found on a worksite in Christchurch evacuated several buildings this afternoon.

Police have since cleared the scene after the shell was dug up at a Ferry Rd site.

A police spokesman said a report of an object "about 14 inches long" came in at about 12.20pm.

He said the bomb disposal unit attended the scene and set up a cordon but everything had been declared safe by 2pm.

Carmel Gulliver from Birchfields Glass and Glazing said five buildings in the area were evacuated, which meant about 20 people in total were sent home for the afternoon.

She said it seemed like "every police officer in Christchurch" was at the scene but staff were happy enough with an afternoon off work.
