Being kind to strangers does not always pay off.

That was the lesson a 20-year-old Christchurch man learned the hard way, when two men he offered a ride in his car repaid him by robbing him.

Police are looking for the suspects, who stole the man's cellphone before taking off on foot.

Detective Sergeant Joel Syme said the two suspects had been with a third man, who knew the victim.

The victim gave all three men a ride. However, after he dropped off the man he knew, the two strangers demanded cash from him. They ended up taking his cellphone before taking off near the Caltex in Hornby, Syme said.

The robbery took place sometime between 2.30pm and 3pm.

"He's actually offered to give these guys a ride and they robbed him," Syme said.

Police were following positive leads in identifying the suspects.
