Police have named 67-year-old Patricia Robertson from Fairlie as the person who died after crashing her car into a wide-load truck carrying a house.

The collision occurred on State Highway 1 in Tinwald, near Ashburton, about 10.45am on Friday.

Police said inquiries indicated Robertson had driven into the side of the house trailer. She was the sole occupant of the car was on her way to meet a relative in Ashburton.

She died at the scene. 

The truck was accompanied by pilot vehicles in front and behind.

Police said the collision took most of the roof off the house.

A funeral for Robertson will be held in Christchurch on Thursday.
