Shocked residents heard someone shout 'I'm satan' before a man was stabbed in suburban Christchurch last night.

Police were called to Somerset Crescent in Spreydon about 10.40pm yesterday after a 22-year-old man was stabbed outside a house.

A police spokesman said the man's injuries were not considered life-threatening, but he underwent surgery at Christchurch hospital this morning and was said to be in a stable condition.

Police expect to formally interview the victim tomorrow, but a scene examination had been done this morning. Detective Senior Sergeant Darry Sweeney said investigators were speaking to several people of interest.

Sweeney said the incident started at an address in Selwyn St and ended after a short chase at Somerset St, where the stabbing occurred.

A nearby resident, who did not want to be named, said she and her partner heard loud voices on the street outside their home.

Her partner looked through the window and saw a group of men chasing a man on Somerset Cres.

The pair heard someone shout 'I'm satan', while others yelled 'come here'.

"My partner said 'there's about to be a big fight I think'. We heard more voices then suddenly all the police came."

The woman saw multiple police officers and dogs searching the street, but did not know what had happened.

"We've been hear a couple of months, but my parents live just around the corner, I worked [nearby], i used to walk home by myself at midnight and I was always fine. I never really expected [this]."

Inna Levtchemko said she heard arguing on the street about the time of the stabbing, but did not realise how serious the incident was.

She had lived in the area for about four years and said there were problems in the area "sometimes".

"It's not [a] very good area actually. I don't feel 100 per cent safe."

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said she was shocked to learn someone had been stabbed near her home.

The woman heard people talking loudly as she was getting ready for bed last night, which was unusual, she said.

"It was very loud. I couldn't hear exactly what words they said. It's unbelievable."

Police are seeking information from anyone who was in the area of Selwyn and Somerset Streets in Barrington about 10.40pm last night. People can call Christchurch police on (03) 363 7400 or anonymously via 0800 555 111.
