Firefighters battled a "well ablaze" community centre in east Christchurch ;ast night.

A Fire Service spokesman said crews were called to a fire at the Wainoni Activities Centre in Hampshire St about 10pm yesterday.

Crews from Wainoni, New Brighton and Christchurch battled the "well ablaze" building for about 90 minutes.

The centre is used for youth and sporting activities.

A fire safety investigator will investigate the cause of the blaze today.
