A red-zone house has been consumed by fire and the Fire Service is already treating it as suspicious.

Two fire appliances were called to the house in Retreat Rd at 2.16pm but found it already engulfed in flames. Twelve firefighters brought the blaze under control in about an hour.

A Fire Service spokesman said a suspicious fire in the middle of the day was very unusual.

''We don't fight a lot of these in daylight,'' he said.

Another house on Retreat Rd was damaged by fire on Monday night and another in Aranui.

There have been at least six suspicious red zone house fires this year.
