LONG-AWAITED: A new sign announces the reopening of Bridge St to two-way traffic.

A crucial bridge providing access to South Brighton and Southshore has opened to two-way traffic for the first time in more than a year.

The Bridge Street bridge was opened to two-way traffic at 3pm today after being exit only for the last year for extensive repairs.

Repair works will continue, with the bridge fully closed for one weekend in November while it is jacked up and permanent abutments are replaced at each end. The date will be advertised in advance.

While the long-awaited reopening of the bridge for two-way traffic will be welcomed by residents wanting a quicker way home, Scirt warns that some restrictions will remain.

These are:

- a 20 km/h speed limit

- 3.5 tonne weight restriction

- no trucks and cars with trailers over 10 metres in total length

The main work on the bridge is expected to be completed in mid-2014.
