Christchurch man Stan Callaghan first set up Christmas lights on his Glastonbury Dr property for his wife's 70th birthday.

That was nine years ago and "it has just grown from there".

The couple's house and lawn are now "chocka" with lights and toys.

Callaghan, 80, flicked the switch last night in anticipation of the festive season.

He said there was a lot of work but people's reactions meant it was "worth every cent".
