Firefighters battled a suspicious blaze at a red zoned Bexley home overnight.

The fire at the vacant unit on Bexley Rd was reported just after 6:30pm yesterday and was ''well involved'' by the time fire crews arrived.

A Fire Service spokesman said it was initially reported as a rubbish fire but when crews arrived it was ''going lickety split''.

The property had been destroyed.

The blaze was being treated as suspicious and fire investigators would be on site this morning, the spokesman said.

A car fire on Aldershot St, Aranui just before 2:15am was also being treated as suspicious.

''It was either on the rear of the section or on the driveway and it looks as though [the car] hadn't been used in a couple of days.''
