Poto Williams will be sworn in as the new Christchurch East MP this afternoon and deliver her maiden speech tomorrow.

Both events were originally scheduled for tomorrow but a change of plan means Williams will become the first female New Zealand MP of Cook Islands origin when she is sworn in at 2pm.

Williams, who convincingly won the Christchurch East by-election last November, has had to wait nearly two months to officially become the electorate's new MP.

She replaces former MP Lianne Dalziel who left the role to successfully challenge the Christchurch mayoralty.

Parliament reconvenes for the first time in 2014 this afternoon and Williams' swearing in will be one of the first orders of business this election year.

Prime Minister John Key will open Parliament with a statement.

Williams is expected to give her maiden speech at 5.30pm tomorrow.

Several of her family and key supporters will watch her deliver that speech in the House.

Labour has promised to revamp New Brighton. What do you think?

Great idea. New Brighton needs renewal.

Why? New Brighton is fine the way it is.

Crazy. Who wants to live out there anyway?
