Police have seized a significant haul of cocaine in Christchurch.

A white powder, believed to be cocaine, was found inside a shipping container in the Lyttleton Port Company city depot in Woolston yesterday.

Police were continuining investigations at the depot this morning.

In a statement released this afternoon police confirmed the discovery of "a quantity" of what was believed to be cocaine.

Police were alerted to the find about 2.30pm yesterday in a container being shipped through the Port of Lyttelton.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Hill said customs and police had launched a joint investigation focusing on the container's movements and destination.

"It has not been determined if the cocaine was for the domestic or international market," Hill said.  "However, cocaine seizures are relatively uncommon in Canterbury."

Police would not release further details of the cocaine or the container's movements because of the ongoing investigation.
