A 53-year-old man has undergone surgery for head injuries after being assaulted in Christchurch.

The attack happened at a residential property on Pateke Pl, in Bromley, on Friday night.

A police spokesman said the 53-year-old victim was taken to Christchurch Hospital by a third party about 9pm on Friday.

He underwent surgery for head injuries that night and was in a serious, but stable, condition in hospital today.

The spokesman said a 40-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the assault and appeared in the Christchurch District Court yesterday morning.

A motor vehicle connected to the incident had also been seized by police, and a forensic examination was carried out at the Pateke Pl property yesterday.

Police would not release further details about the assault as the matter was now before the courts, the spokesman said.
