A young man is in a serious condition with multiple injuries after a crash in central Christchurch this morning.

Communications advisor Ian Henderson said a man aged in his early 20s was taken to Christchurch hospital with multiple injuries after the crash on Moorhouse Ave at 4.30am. 

The crash closed part of Moorhouse Ave for several hours. The west-bound lanes from Selwyn St to Hagley Ave were reopened at 7am.

Police communications spokesman Inspector John Doherty said the crash involved only one car.

The driver reamins in a serious condition.
