Haast Pass lane to reopen tomorrow
One lane of State Highway 6 between the Gates of Haast bridge and Haast Pass summit will reopen tomorrow.
The road has been closed since 8pm on September 10, just before heavy rain caused a massive slip at Diana Falls.
The NZ Transport Agency said one lane should reopen to motorists about midday tomorrow, but would be open only between 8am and 6pm in case rain or earthquakes cause further slipping.
Spokesman Pete Connors warned the highway could be closed again at short notice if there was rain during the day because of the increased risk of more debris coming down.
"While it's not an ideal situation, it at least gets an important freight and tourism link between Otago and the West Coast, operating during daylight hours.''
The road's reopening would be managed carefully until the slip settled, he said.
Gates either side of the slip would be used to physically close the highway and signage would give people advance warning of a closure ahead.
