Mt Hutt is closed due to gale force winds, which are not expected to ease throughout the day.

At 6am, ski area staff experienced 70kmh gusts through the base area.

Christchurch is also experiencing strong winds.

MetService is forecasting showers, high cloud, north-easterlies and a high of 14 degrees Celsius in the city today.

It says the rain should ease tomorrow.

The sun will also come out tomorrow ahead of the Crusaders versus Highlanders match on Saturday night.

Those driving to the match at AMI Stadium are advised that traffic management plans will be in place.

Jack Hinton Dr will be closed from Twigger St to Whiteleigh Ave on Saturday from 5.30pm to 10pm. A detour will be in place via Lincoln Rd, Moorhouse Ave and Blenheim Rd.

Parking will also be restricted in many areas and pedestrians are asked to enter AMI stadium via Whiteleigh Ave/Jack Hinton Dr or Lincoln Rd/Twigger St.
